The tragic incident has reportedly shocked residents of the area and renewed concerns over the growing cases of witchcraft-related violence against children in the state.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 29-year-old Saviour Otu Adim in connection with the child’s death, following a report filed by Mrs Itoro Udofia on Friday.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had accused the child of witchcraft before allegedly assaulting her.
“The suspect is currently in Police custody, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy,” Eitokpah stated.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation.
The police spokesperson condemned the incident and urged the public to remain vigilant against child abuse, stressing the need to protect vulnerable children and report suspected cases promptly.
“We urge members of the public to protect children, promptly report cases of abuse, and refrain from spreading unverified information or taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
The incident has further raised concerns about witchcraft accusations being used to justify violence against children in parts of Cross River State, with residents calling for tougher measures and increased public awareness to discourage the practice.
